obscureclouds asked: My comment was aimed at the original poster who said they took photography courses and said they couldn't understand the piece as art. The artistic genius thing is not bullshit, if you'd ever witnessed it in progress first hand, you'd know that.
Ahhh. Sorry for the misunderstanding re: original comment.
Not sorry for the fact that I am about to call you out for being a fucking ass.
In my best playground voice: ‘You’d know that first hand’
Fuck you.
Yeah, really. Not in a good mood tonight. Don’t assume what people do know and don’t know. You have no fucking clue what I’ve experienced or not experienced. Artistic genius is and isn’t bullshit. Artistic genius, to me, as an expression, is absolutely fucking useless. It’s overused, and meaningless today. Anyone (an 8 year old, or an elephant) can be an artistic genius. I feel able to comment on this because of my extensive experience. This is what I’ve lived, so, yeah. I’m calling out the concept of ‘artistic genius’. Who defines what artistic genius is? Is it universal? Not really. Are all of the artists who have become famous characteristic of artistic genius in some way? Obviously not, since popularity and recognition has shifted over time. Who’s to say that what is considered ‘genius’ today will be tomorrow? It’s a bullshit term.
In my previous posting, I was referring to the societal expectation that artists will behave/act a certain way, and that it is excusable behaviour because of …
ARTISTIC GENIUS.
I call bullshit. I’ve worked with a few erratic, crazy, truly out there artists whose work has been crap, or great. I’ve worked with some very normal, down to earth people that treat their art as a passion/job. Some are highly successful and some aren’t. But some take this ‘artist’ title, and it’s artistic liscense and push it to the limit. I’ve seen people tolerate ridiculous behaviour, and brush it off as being down to ‘the artist’ in them.
And yet… the minute I pee on the plants.
I’m not saying there’s not fabulous art, inspired, audacious artists, and amazing legacies of work, I am saying though - one person’s genius is another person’s Lichtenstein.*
*That being said, I am moving past my serious dislike of Lichtenstein. I’ll have to find someone else to be curmudgeonly about. Fluxus movement, I’m looking at you. Nah, just kidding. Wasn’t Oldenberg a member? I love me some soft toothpaste…
